The college years include stress and busy schedules, sometimes making it difficult to eat a balanced diet. High-calorie convenience foods offer quick energy but won't sustain you through a busy day of classes and studying. A well-rounded diet and exercise, along with convenient dieting tips, can help you avoid or lose the freshman 15.

Set Goals

Healthy goals motivate you to make better choices when it comes to eating and exercising. Your goals can vary depending on your current health. If you are satisfied with your weight, your goals might involve eating at least five servings of fruit and vegetables each day or exercising at least five days a week. Set goals that will help you achieve your desired level of health.

Navigate the Dining Center

The dining center presents some challenges when it comes to healthy eating. Fried foods, fatty desserts and other unhealthy options are tempting, but there are healthier options if you look for them. Most dining centers offer a salad bar with a variety of healthy choices. Look for grilled or broiled entrees instead of greasy foods. According to the Center for Young Women's Health, you should check out different dining centers around campus, because they might have different dining options.

Pack Healthy Snacks

Many healthy snacks are portable, so you can pack them in your bag before you head out to class. If you don't have time for breakfast before you leave for class, pack some fresh fruit or a bagel to eat when you arrive. Snacks to keep with you throughout the day might include dried fruit, crackers, granola, trail mix and energy bars.

Indulge Occasionally

A healthy diet does not mean depriving yourself of all of your favorite foods. Occasionally indulging in a slice of pizza or a small scoop of ice cream gives you a taste without blowing your diet. The key is limiting the amount you eat and eating it only occasionally. Avoid keeping foods in your dorm room that might tempt you. Instead, make it a special occasion by going to your favorite pizza place with friends.

Get Physical

A physically active lifestyle during the college years also helps your overall health and weight management. Walk or bike around town and to your classes. And take advantage of workout facilities available on campus.
