Toddlers are notoriously picky eaters, and sometimes, this gets in the way of them consuming enough fat and calories to sustain a healthy weight. If this is the case, your pediatrician may suggest putting your toddler on a higher-fat diet to help him gain weight at a steady, healthy rate. The trick is to find foods that your child will willingly eat.

Dairy

According to Nemours Health Care System, it is recommended that children over the age of two drink low-fat milk. However, some toddlers may need to continue drinking whole milk until past their second birthday. Also offer your child full-fat yogurt, cheese and ice cream.

Proteins

Offer your toddler mini-meatballs, hamburgers or meatloaf made with ground beef. Peanut butter or almond butter are high-fat alternatives that are high in protein, provided your child does not have a nut allergy. Make it even more nutritious by serving it on a whole grain bread or on a banana.

Avocado

Avocados are packed with healthy nutrients, but are also high in healthy monosaturated fats. They also contain several vitamins, fiber and folates, all essential to toddler growth and development. Use the avocado to make guacamole, and serve with pita chips.

Cooking With Fat

Cook your toddler's eggs or vegetables with olive or vegetable oil to increase the fat content. Top a bowlful of broccoli or green beans with full-fat cheese for added fat and flavor. Coconut milk or full-fat yogurt can be added to a fruit smoothie for a healthy meal or snack; and mayonnaise can be mixed into a tuna, chicken or egg salad.
