Take nux vomica as a remedy for emotional oversensitivity, chills and digestive problems caused by overindulgence or overwork, says "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Healing Remedies." Homeopathy uses the electromagnetic charge of certain substances to stimulate the body's own vital force for healing. A dilution of the selected substance forms the active component in each individual remedy. Due to the extent of the dilution, the original material exists in only an infinitesimal quantity in the final product and therefore produces no side effects. Paradoxically, the greater the dilution, the greater the strength of the remedy. Since its inception in the 1800s, homeopathy has proved very effective, according to "Homeopathic Medicine at Home." Nonetheless, always consult a physician before attempting any homeopathic remedies.
The Poison Nut Plant
Also called Strychnos nux vomica, poison nut plant is the active ingredient of the nux vomica homeopathic remedy, according to "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Healing Remedies." Poison nut plant is lethal in large doses, causing muscle spasm and respiratory failure resulting in death. In nux vomica however, it heals the body through the principle of similarity. Similarity, according to "Homeopathic Medicine at Home" states that "like cures like." So an ingredient will counteract in a sick person the symptoms it would produce in a well person.
Alchohol and Water
A combination of 90 percent alcohol and 10 percent distilled water, mixed with the seeds of the poison nut plant produces the mother tincture for nux vomica. The next step in the process is a dilution of the mother tincture. Dilution and succusions--shaking--create a potentized form of the substance. 1c potency is 1 drop of tincture with 99 drops of alcohol and water, while 2c is 1 drop of 1c potency with 99 drops of alcohol and water, and so on. At 12c potency virtually none of the original substance remains, says "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Healing Remedies."
Lactose
The final dilution of the mother tincture, depending on the severity and duration of the symptoms, is added to lactose, which forms the little white pills, granules or powder that is dissolved in the mouth to take the nux vomica remedy. "Homeopathic Medicine at Home" recommends a standard dose of two pills every 4 to 6 hours until symptoms subside and warns against using a dilution stronger than 6c without instructions from a homeopathic doctor.
