How to Improve Employee Attitude

Economic struggles can certainly take a toll on a company. However, a dip in employee morale can make matters worse. If employees dread going to work and count the minutes until they leave, job performance can suffer. Bad attitudes at work can also be contagious and can spread quickly throughout a business.

Step 1

Recognize employees' service to your company by saying "thank you" on a frequent basis. Show appreciation and do not make your employees feel as if they are being taken for granted. Compliment employees when you believe they have done a particularly good job on a task.

Step 2

Set goals for your employees to work toward. Reward employees with awards, bonuses, raises or simply a day off with pay if they achieve a goal. Recognize employee accomplishments in front of other workers.

Step 3

Show your employees that you are confident in their abilities by not constantly looking over their shoulders. Schedule reviews of your employees' performance to ensure they are meeting or exceeding expectations. Talk to workers about their concerns during these reviews. Make them feel that their opinions matter at your company.

Step 4

Act on the opinions of your employees. Show them they are being heard by making some of the changes that they request. Do not necessarily think in terms of huge, sweeping changes. Make small changes like fixing the copying machine or improving your Internet service. Remember that even small changes can make your employees have a more pleasant experience at work.

Step 5

Give your employees more responsibility at your company. Put employees in charge of committees or organizing special events. Do not make your employees feel like you are a dictator who controls every facet of their life at work.

Step 6

Make your workplace fun by organizing occasional team-building exercises or short games. Try to get everyone involved in these activities. Place employees with co-workers whom they do not generally speak with on a daily basis. Do not spend too much time on games so that employees are not frustrated that they cannot sufficiently complete their work.

Step 7

Give your employees the opportunity to attend training courses so that they can acquire new skills. Make your employees feel like they can consistently learn and advance at your company. Do not make them feel like they will be doing the same exact job in 10 years.
