There are many good reasons you might consider testing for a career. Young people sometimes don't know what direction they want to go in after high school or college, and career testing can help. Career testing can also be a good idea for those who have been out of the workforce for a long time, such as stay-at-home moms who wish to resume a career but aren't sure what job would be a good fit. This type of testing is also useful for those who are already established in a career but are considering a change. Career testing can be accomplished in several ways.

Step 1

Search for career testing online. There are many websites that offer in-depth career testing, many for free. This is a good place to begin if you're just starting out and looking for career ideas. These tests also often test personality traits and activities favored as well.

Step 2

Go to your local community college, technical school or community center and inquire about any career testing they perform. If you're still in high school, the school guidance counselor will also be able to direct you to appropriate career testing. In some cases you'll be able to test immediately, while other schools and centers have a set schedule of testing and require registration in advance.

Step 3

Check with large employers in your area and see if they offer career testing to the public. If their company is one you are considering applying at, this is even better. Large companies often have career testing available to prospective employees to see if you would be a good fit for their needs.

Tips and Warnings

  • Don't worry if career testing indicates a job possibility that doesn't interest you. These tests are just to give you direction, you don't have to follow the recommendations given.
