Even the most basic skateboarding tricks and maneuvers require significant balance and board control. Skaters often have trouble with tricks and do not know where to turn for hints or help. Certain tips can help the skater on his way to successfully landing a new or difficult trick.

Grinds

The two metallic pieces on the bottom of the skateboard, defined as trucks, are used for grinds. Skaters lock one or both trucks onto a rail or ledge while balancing in the grind position. Grinds that take place on only one truck require balance. Mastering the 50-50 grind, which requires both trucks, will allow the skater to get comfortable balancing over the board during the grinding process.

Manuals

A manual refers to a skateboarding maneuver that involves the skater balancing on two wheels of the skateboard. Skaters hold out their arms to help stabilize themselves during the balancing act of the manual. The manual takes place on the back two wheels while the nose manual takes place on the front two. Practicing the manual on flat ground can help skaters get comfortable with balancing on one truck. This remains helpful for grinds that require the skater to balance on either the front or back truck.

Flip Tricks

Skaters use the heel and toe of the front and back foot to make the board flip in the air. These flip tricks require the skater to hover above the board while it flips beneath him. Mastering the Ollie can help skaters jump high enough to allow the board to flip. The Ollie refers to a skateboarding maneuver that involves the skater pressing on the back of the board while leaping in the air. Practicing the Ollie will help the skater have an ample amount of time to catch the board after it flips.

Ramps

Another facet of skateboarding tricks involves the use of man-made ramps. Novice skateboarders find ramp skating difficult due to the steep incline that makes up the surface of most ramps. Having a low center of gravity can help the skater remain stable while rolling up and down the vertical walls of the ramp. Bending the knees helps the skater center her weight over the board while skating the ramp. Holding the arms parallel to the ground can also help the skater stabilize her balance.

Foot Placement

The placement of the front and back foot on top of the skateboard remains a vital aspect of successfully landing a trick. Skaters place the left or right foot, depending on preference, on the back of the board. Placing the front foot just below the four bolts at the front of the board will ensure the skater's stability on top of the skateboard.
