A skateboard deck refers to the wooden component of the board, which has a concave-shape front and back. The deck, which is made of wood, can be damaged quicker than the metal elements of the skateboard. The wood around the outer edge of the skateboard deck often chips due to excess use. The sandpaper-textured tape on top of the deck, referred to as the grip tape, peels off when exposed to moisture and sunlight. Repairing the damaged skateboard deck requires a few basic tools.
Step 1
Examine the top and bottom of the skateboard deck to locate any chipped areas that may have sharp protruding pieces of wood. Pull out any shards of wood that stick out from the skateboard deck.
Step 2
Rub the sheet of sandpaper around the outer edge of the deck to smooth down any rough edges. Rub the sandpaper in any of the areas where you located a chip to sand any jagged edges.
Step 3
Cut an incision with the utility knife into the grip tape across the front or back of the skateboard deck. Peel off the old or damaged grip tape from the newly sanded deck.
Step 4
Pull off the paper located on the new sheet of grip tape. Apply the new sheet of grip tape to the top of the skateboard deck, starting at either the front or back end.
Step 5
Scrape around the outline of the deck with the metallic edge of the screwdriver. Cut into the rectangular sheet of grip tape with the utility knife. Slice around the outer edge of the newly gripped skateboard deck to remove the leftover grip tape.
