Punching a speed bag or a heavy bag generates forces on the mount that's supporting the bag. Where a wall connection has solid backing, such as 4-inch thick framing lumber or concrete block, a punching bag mount that's made from welded tube steel can provide stable support. The mount consists of a flat steel base that attaches to the wall and supports arms that extend from the base. An eye bolt for a chain hook is attached to a cross piece at the end of the arms. The length of the support arms determines how far the bag hangs from the wall.
Step 1
Cut 4 pieces of flat steel 30 inches long. Mark locations for wall anchors on each piece and drill 1/4-inch holes at these locations.
Step 2
Place the 30-inch pieces in a flat square configuration on the workbench and weld the pieces at the corners. This is the wall base.
Step 3
Cut 2 pieces of tube steel 40 inches long as support arms. Cut one piece 26 inches long as the hook support. Drill a 1/4-inch hole through the center of the hook support for the eye bolt.
Step 4
Place the support arms about 30 inches apart on the workbench. Position the hook support between these at one end to form a 3-sided, rectangular frame. Make sure the hole for the eye bolt is facing up and weld the support frame together.
Step 5
Butt the ends of the support arms perpendicular to the wall base. Make sure the bottom edges of the arms align with the bottom edge of the base. Weld the arms to the base.
Step 6
Measure from the top corners of the flat steel base to the outer corners of the support arms and cut two pieces of tube steel this length as stabilizers. Weld the pieces in place. Insert the eye bolt to complete the wall mount.
Tips and Warnings
- A backing plate for a speed bag can be incorporated into the assembly. Drill pilot holes when using lag bolts to attach the mount to wood backing. Use expansion anchor bolts for attaching the mount to masonry or concrete walls.
- Wear the proper protection when welding and cutting steel bars. Do not attempt to weld without supervision.
