A breast pump is a device that is designed to express milk from your breast. Breast pumps can be electric or manual, and they are used by mothers to stock milk for the baby for later feedings or if she is away from the baby for any length of time. Using a breast pump is not complicated, but certain steps should be followed to get the most out of the experience.
Electric Pump
Step 1
Place a warm compress on your breast, gently squeeze your nipples and think of your baby feeding to help stimulate milk glands, Hollister.com says, in preparation to use the pump.
Step 2
Plug in your breast pump, and screw the milk container onto the pump. Center the opening of your breast pump over your nipple, and press the "on" button to start the pump.
Step 3
Watch the pump suction your nipple out, then back in again. Milk should empty into the container each time your nipple is pulled out. Leave the pump on each breast for about 15 to 20 minutes. Switch breasts roughly every five minutes.
Step 4
Wash any part of the breast pump that came into contact with your breasts in hot, soapy water, then allow it to air dry completely.
Manual Pump
Step 1
Prepare yourself in the same manner as with an electric pump. Warm, then stimulate your nipples, and visualize your baby drinking from your breast.
Step 2
Assemble the pump and container, then place the open end of the pump over your nipple. Pull the pump out with your hand in short, quick squeezes to imitate how your baby would start feeding.
Step 3
Pump a little slower with a "squeeze and hold" type of motion once your milk has begun to flow.
Step 4
Wash the pump in hot soapy water and let it air dry completely once you are finished pumping.
Tips and Warnings
- Don't be discouraged if your milk doesn't flow freely at first. It will improve with practice.
