Ping pong paddles are most commonly purchased for recreational use, in which case the paddle comes pre-assembled with rubber sheets already attached to the wooden blade. These will be adequate for players who do not play on a competitive level—and are available for purchase at most sporting good retail stores. For players looking for a high performance, customizable paddle, there are a few things to consider before purchasing the different parts.

Purchasing your Ping Pong Paddles

Step 1

Decide if you want to buy a high-performance paddle set or if you want to assemble the pieces of your paddle yourself. If you decide to purchase a customized set, you can choose a set that enhances your strengths such as spin, speed or control.

Step 2

Choose between three main types of blades. The first is an all-around blade that delivers balls at a medium speed with better control, which is good for beginner players or players with a counter-attacking style. The second type is an attacking blade, which has a more rigid plywood in order to generate more power. If you are a defensive-oriented player, you will want to go with the third type of blade, which uses a softer wood in order to better control the pace and placement of the ball.

Step 3

Purchase a rubber that is authorized by the International Table Tennis Federation that fits your style. The rubbers vary in thickness and density, depending on your style of play. Generally, the thicker the rubber allows for a more attacking style. You can also choose which side of the rubber to glue to the paddle. If you glue the rubber with the smooth side outward, that will allow for you to better alternate between an attacking and defensive playing style. If you choose to have the pips pointing outward, you will be able to better control speed and spin.

Tips and Warnings

  • Understand your style of play before purchasing the components of your ping pong paddle. Usually only advanced competitors assemble their own paddles. Be sure to purchase a quality paddle glue to assemble your paddle.
