Avelox is the brand name for the generic drug moxifloxacin. This medication is a type of fluoroquinolone antibiotic that interferes with bacterial replication and growth within the body. Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, under the age of 18 or hypersensitive to moxifloxacin should not use Avelox unless otherwise directed by a medical professional.
Sinus Infections
Avelox is indicated to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including sinus infections. A bacterial sinus infection, also called acute bacterial sinusitis, can cause symptoms of nasal congestion, facial pain, headache, fever or bad breath. Patients who have a sinus infection caused by the bacteria Moraxella catarrhalis, Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae may experience relief from symptoms following treatment with Avelox, RxList reports.
Lung Infections
Certain types of lung infections, such as chronic bronchitis or community-acquired pneumonia, can be treated with Avelox. A lung infection can cause fever, cough, wheezing or chest discomfort in affected patients. Treatment with Avelox is effective against bacterial lung infections caused by methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus, Moraxella catarrhalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae and Haemophilus parainfluenzae and influenzae, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration explains.
Skin Infections
This medication is indicated to treat patients with bacterial skin infections caused by methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes. Patients who develop a bacterial skin infection can notice the appearance of red, irritated or inflamed patches of skin across the body. These skin lesions can become dry, flaky or blistered and may begin to itch. Patients who frequently scratch at the infected skin are at an increased risk of spreading the skin infection to other regions of the body.
Intra-Abdominal Infections
Certain types of bacterial infections within the abdomen can be treated with Avelox. This medication is indicated to treat intra-abdominal infections caused by several types of bacteria including E. coli, Clostridium perfringens, Proteus mirabilis and Streptococcus anginosus. An intra-abdominal infection can cause mild to severe abdominal pain and upset stomach symptoms in affected patients.
