Simvastatin is a medication in a class of drugs known as statins. It is prescribed for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, or high cholesterol. According to Drugs.com, simvastatin is also used to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack and other heart complications in people with diabetes, coronary heart disease or other risk factors. This medication may be used in conjunction with other medications, diet and exercise. There are some side effects associated with simvastatin.

Headache and Muscle Pain

Simvastatin can cause headache and mild muscle pain in some users. These side effects may be temporary and diminish over time as the body adjusts to simvastatin. Patients should consult their physicians regarding the use of an over-the-counter medication such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen for the relief of headache and muscle discomfort. Severe muscle pain, tenderness and weakness may be a sign of a dangerous condition that results in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure, explains Drugs.com. Patients who experience such symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.

Cold Symptoms

Some patients taking simvastatin can develop cold symptoms. Sore throat, sneezing and nasal congestion may occur. The use of humidified air while sleeping, saline nasal spray and throat lozenges may help alleviate symptoms. If these symptoms occur in conjunction with fever, swollen lymph glands, cough, wheezing and yellow or green-tinged sputum, they may be a sign of an infection which requires medical treatment.

Stomach Discomfort

Patients taking simvastatin may experience mild stomach pain, gas, bloating, stomach upset and heartburn, states Drugs.com. Taking this medication with food or at bedtime may help to lessen gastrointestinal discomfort. Eating a diet of bland foods, while avoiding spicy or fatty foods, may help diminish these side effects. If gas and bloating become bothersome, an anti-gas medication such as simethicone may be helpful. Nausea, constipation and diarrhea may occur while taking this medication. Eating a diet high in fruits, vegetables and fiber may help diminish constipation. If diarrhea becomes severe or persistent, a physician should be consulted. Left untreated, diarrhea can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
