According to Drugs.com, Prevacid, the generic name of which is lansoprazole, belongs to a group of medications known as proton pump inhibitors. Prevacid and other proton pump inhibitors decrease production of acid in the stomach. Prevacid is used to treat stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Prevacid, like any other drug, has side effects.

Gastrointestinal Effects

Drugs.com states that frequent effects of Prevacid on the gastrointestinal system include stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, constipation and heartburn. High doses of Prevacid may cause liver damage, inflammation of the pancreas, diabetes mellitus, white patches on the tongue, sores in the mouth, growth of fungus in the esophagus and growth of cancerous polyps in the lining of the stomach.

Musculoskeletal Effects

According to Drugs.com, frequent effects of Prevacid on the musculoskeletal system include bone pain, joint pain, muscle pain, muscle weakness, arthritis, neck rigidity and back pain. The Food and Drug Administration website warns that high doses of Prevacid may cause bone fractures of the hip, wrist and spine. The risk of bone fractures is increased in patients with existing osteoporosis and in patients over 50 years of age who take high doses of Prevacid. The doctor recommends that doctors prescribe a lower dose of Prevacid and for the shortest duration in order to avoid bone fractures.

Nervous System Effects

Drugs.com states that frequent effects of Prevacid on the nervous system include headache, dizziness, confusion, dry mouth, hallucinations, decreased sex drive, insomnia and vertigo. Patients should avoid driving or operating machinery until they become aware of the effects of Prevacid on the body. Patients should also rise slowly from sitting positions in order to to avoid dizziness.
