Whether you graduated recently or you are looking for a career change, applying for a job can be stressful. One of the most important tools in the job application process is your resume. This document gives your potential employer an overview of who you are and how you would fit in as an employee. Preparing a professional resume and understanding the job application process will help you overcome anxiety and approach your potential employer with confidence.

Step 1

Type a resume on your computer that highlights your educational and career experience, accolades and accomplishments. Select a basic font, and use bullet points instead of full sentences to keep your resume concise. The Cornell College Education Office recommends beginning each bullet point on your resume with an actionable verb.

Step 2

Write a cover letter outlining how your experiences and skills match with the needs of the position you are applying for. Your cover letter should be more than a paragraph but no more than a page.

Step 3

Fill out any required application form for the position. Some companies will offer forms online, others require you to fill out a form and send it to human resources. Make a copy of all application forms for your own records.

Step 4

Drop off a copy of your resume and cover letter to the hiring manager---or submit your documents online through the company's application page. Respond promptly to any calls or emails from the company regarding your application---to show your interest in the position.

Step 5

Prepare for your interview by reviewing any materials regarding the position and the company. Jot down questions you may have for your interviewer, such as specific job benefits, hours or time off, as well as questions you think you may be asked. Be ready to explain why you are interested in the job, what your strengths and weaknesses are and why you are the best candidate for the job. Practice the interview with a friend or family member, or attend a mock interview session at your university.

Step 6

Show up early to your interview dressed in professional attire. Answer each question honestly---and always be yourself. Send the manager, recruiter or interviewer a "thank you" letter within one day of the interview.

Tips and Warnings

  • Sign up for a simple and professional email address for use with job correspondence. Always proofread your resume, cover letter and application for before submitting it. If possible, find out the name of your interviewer before you arrive---and address the interviewer accordingly.
