Badminton is a popular outdoor sport because you can set up a basic net in your own backyard. Badminton dates back to mid-19th century British India, but has only been an Olympic sport since 1972, according to USA Badminton. Backyard badminton can be played with two to four players, each holding a badminton racquet and hitting one shuttlecock back and forth over the net. The object of badminton is to gain points by hitting the shuttlecock over the net and onto the ground, within the set boundaries. The first person or team to score 15 points wins the game.

Step 1

Assemble the two poles if the poles come in separate plastic or aluminum pieces. The bottom of the pole may have a point and the top of the pole may have a cap, but sets will vary by manufacturer. Do not put the poles into the ground yet.

Step 2

Check if your pole has two top holes at the very top. If so, the first hole is to secure the pole to the ground with rope and the second hole is for the net. If the pole only has one hole at the top, the hole is for the net and your pole must be secured through a different method.

Step 3

Attach the left side of the net first. Loop the rope from the top corner of the net into the second top hole of the pole. Tie in a secure knot. Loop the bottom left rope through the third hole on the pole and secure.

Step 4

Attach the right side of the net to the other pole. Tie the top net rope through the second top hole and secure the bottom right net rope to the third hole on the pole.

Step 5

Add the anchor ropes to the poles, if you have them. Insert the longer anchor rope at the topmost hole on the left pole and pull halfway through so that two ends of the rope dangle evenly on the ground. Insert the shorter anchor rope through the hole below the net, pulling halfway through so the two ends of the rope dangle evenly on the ground. Repeat on the right side.

Step 6

Tie the eight stakes onto the eight ends of the anchor ropes. You should have four stakes at each pole.

Step 7

Stand the poles up and stretch the net taut across the grass. The standard distance between poles is 20 feet, although your backyard net may be smaller.

Step 8

Push the poles firmly into the ground, using the pointed ends of the poles to dig into the ground.

Step 9

Pull the anchor ropes out until they are taut and hammer the stakes into the ground, approximately three to five feet away from the poles.

Step 10

Hit a couple shuttlecocks or birdies at the net to test the net. If the net is crooked or loose, adjust the poles and stakes until the net stays in its proper place.

Tips and Warnings

  • If your badminton poles do not have holes for anchoring your set to the ground with ropes and stakes, you may anchor the poles to buckets or tires filled with cement or try hammering the aluminum poles into the ground.
