When the unemployment rate hovers near the double-digit mark, a successful job interview can particularly make all the difference in helping you land that dream job. It goes without saying that you probably shouldn't use profanity during your interview, but there are other tips that can help you stand out from the pack and make your prospective employer take a second look at you.
Prepare for the Interview
There's a good chance that you're competing for the job with people just as qualified as you, so you need to do a little advance work to help move you to the head of the line. Learn about the company and the specific job for which you're applying.
Know the name of the person interviewing you. Know how long the company has been in business and what products or services they provide. Know as much as you can about the prospective job and any industry trends that would affect the position. Practice answering any obvious questions you know you will be asked.
Make a Good Impression
The first impression you make can be the difference between getting the job and just being another interviewee. Dress appropriately for the job for which you're applying. Listen carefully to your interviewer and make eye contact throughout the interview.
Answer all questions as thoroughly as possible. Emphasize any strengths you have that may make the interviewer give you a second look. Avoid making any negative comments about the job, company or employees---past or present.
Be Ready
Make sure you have all the necessary items handy that your interviewer may need. Make sure your resume is up to date. Have at least three good references handy with their contact information readily available.
Have your driver's license, social security card and other professional documentation handy. Have some selling points about your specific ability to do the job prepared ahead of time. Ask questions about the company and the job to demonstrate to your interviewer your interest in them.
