The American Hair Loss Association reports that 95 percent of hair loss in men is from male pattern baldness, which is caused by the hormone dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, attacking genetically inherited hair follicles prone to miniaturization. DHT significantly shortens the follicles' growth phase and progressively thins them.
Sustanon is an anabolic steroid that combines four esters of testosterone. It is commonly prescribed for testosterone replacement therapy, but also for bodybuilding or athletic pursuits. Steroid.com reports that Sustanon "will do exactly what other forms of testosterone will do" and can result in hair loss if you suffer from male pattern baldness, since testosterone converts to DHT.
Step 1
Make a doctor's appointment. Ask your doctor if you are experiencing male pattern baldness, or genetic hair loss.
Step 2
Discuss with him the FDA-approved hair loss treatments finasteride and topical spironolactone if you are experiencing male pattern baldness from DHT.
Step 3
Go to your pharmacy and pick up your 30-day supply of finasteride and your topical spironolactone lotion if he prescribes both treatments.
Step 4
Take one tablet of finasteride every day. You will be using this for an indefinite amount of time. Full results can take up to 12 months to occur. The American Hair Loss Association explains that finasteride can control hair loss by inhibiting the "type II 5-alpha-reductace, the enzyme that converts testosterone into a more potent androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT)." In Layman's terms, finasteride prevents testosterone from converting to DHT, and less DHT means less hair loss. The American Hair Loss Association recommends finasteride as the "first line of attack" for men addressing their male pattern baldness caused by DHT.
Step 5
Apply topical spironolactone lotion to areas of thinning hair two times daily. Topical spironolactone, or "spiro," functions similarly to finasteride by preventing DHT from attacking hairs prone to shrinkage. Dr. Richard Lee, hair loss specialist, reports on Minoxidil.com that spironolactone, when applied topically to the scalp, can directly inhibit and prevent DHT from attacking hair follicles. It can be applied specifically to areas of thinning hair or areas prone to it, like the hairline or the vertex of the scalp, in order to control potential hair loss caused by Sustanon.
Tips and Warnings
- Use finasteride every day. Do not take a double dose of finasteride if you forget to take it. Use topical spironolactone after washing your hair, after your hair is dry. Ideally, topical spironolactone should be applied every morning and every night.
- Sustanon should be be used only under a doctor's supervision. Finasteride was found to cause sexual side effects in less than 3 percent of men.
