Following a healthy, low-fat diet doesn't mean you have to give up all desserts and sweet treats. You and your kids can be just as satisfied with low-fat desserts as you are with high fat desserts. Even though these desserts are low fat, they still have sugar, so serve small portions after a healthy meal. Disney's Family website recommends using wheat flour instead of white flour, low-fat dairy and natural sugars to keep the desserts as healthy as possible.

Sherbet and Cookies

After a nutritious meal, serve your kids scoops of their favorite flavor of sherbet in small pudding or dessert cups. Top with blueberries, raspberries, sliced strawberries or orange slices. Stick a couple of vanilla wavers in the side of the bowl to provide texture and crunch.

Almond Bananas and Yogurt

Mix 2 tbsp. brown sugar, 1 tsp. butter and 1/2 tsp. of vegetable oil in a skillet until the mixture starts to bubble. Add lime juice, cinnamon and almond extract. Stir and cook the mixture until it becomes slightly thick.

Cut bananas into halves or quarters. Add to the sauce. Scoop the sauce over the bananas and simmer until the bananas soften. Place the bananas and sauce into dessert dishes. Sprinkle with slivered almonds. Serve with regular vanilla yogurt or frozen vanilla yogurt on the side.

Chocolate and Fruit Sundae

Place a half-scoop of chocolate frozen yogurt or low-fat ice cream into a sundae cup. Layer the frozen dessert with raspberries, blueberries or sliced strawberries. Top with a half-scoop of vanilla frozen yogurt or low-fat yogurt. Drizzle with dark chocolate sauce. If your kids like nuts or shredded coconut, you may sprinkle a small amount on top. Add a small dollop of fat-free whipped topping and serve.

Brown Betty with Fruit

Slice four apples and put into a saucepan. Sprinkle 3 tbsp. of brown sugar over the apples. Add cinnamon and 4 tbsp. of water, cover and cook for approximately five minutes. Add a cup of blackberries and simmer for another two to three minutes.

As this cooks, melt 2 tbsp. of butter in another skillet. Add 1/2 cup of whole grain bread crumbs and 1/2 cup of uncooked oatmeal. Stir until the bread crumbs and oatmeal for approximately three minutes, until they have browned.

Scoop the fruit mixture into four dessert bowls. Top with the breadcrumb mixture. Serve with vanilla frozen yogurt, low-fat ice cream or fat-free whipped topping.

Angel Food with Berries

Slice small servings of store-bought angel food cake, which is naturally low in fat, and place on dessert dishes. Top each slice with 1/4 cup of blueberries and 1/4 cup of sliced strawberries. Add a dollop of fat-free whipped topping.
