Elocon is a skin cream for irritation and redness due to eczema, rashes and dermatitis. It is an anti-inflammatory cream made with 0.1 percent concentration of mometasone furoate. Elocon is classified as a synthetic corticosteroid. Other than purified water, there are six ingredients in this prescription medication.

Momestasone Furoate

Momestasone furoate is a prescription drug that has the potential to cause such side effects as acne, burning, itching, irritation, infection, dryness, sores and skin color changes. If your skin's condition worsens while on this medication, seek help from your physician.

Hexylene Glycol

Hexylene glycol is a solvent, emulsifier and skin conditioner, according to the Cosmetic Safety Database. It helps ingredients in the mixture dissolve into each other and blend well while conditioning the skin and keeping it moisturized.

White Wax

White wax, also known as beeswax, is used to keep the formula from separating into separate liquid and oil sections. It makes for a creamy consistency. Beeswax is natural ingredient and comes from the honeybee.

Titanium Dioxide

This ingredient is an additive used for bulking, for its sunscreen agents and for its opacifying properties, according to the Cosmetic Safety Database. It keeps the cream from becoming transparent. It also blocks some of the sun's rays. Titanium dioxide works by having the UV rays scatter and not be absorbed into the skin.

Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate

Aluminum starch octenylsuccinate, according to the Cosmetic Safety Database, is an anticaking and absorbent agent. It keeps the cream from caking up and flaking on the skin. It also absorbs oil and water to help the skin heal. It makes Elocon able to glide better on the skin without getting dry.

White Petrolatum

White petrolatum is a skin protectant and conditioner. Skin protectants keep irritation and inflammation from forming on the skin from outside sources. Conditioners keep skin soft and smooth.
