Job interviews put you under a lot of pressure and stress. The interview represents your opportunity to make a strong first impression and to demonstrate your qualifications as clearly and intelligently as possible. By preparing thoroughly for your interview, you can lower your stress levels and increase your chances of performing well.
Research
Research the company or organization for which you are interviewing. Find out more about its background, its mission and any recent accomplishments for which it has been recognized. Research the specific people you will be meeting with as well. Know their names and positions.
Review the job description and think of examples in your work experience when you have demonstrated the preferred and required skills and qualities included in the job description. Prepare a list of questions to ask your interviewers about the company and the job.
Resume
Review your resume and tailor it to suit the specific job for which you are applying. Consult the job description and highlight keywords that describe skills, attributes and qualifications the employers are looking for. Include any work or academic experience on your resume that demonstrates these skills, and describe your experiences or achievements using the same keywords from the job description.
Check your spelling and grammar several times, and put your name, address and email at the top of the resume. Print several copies of your resume on heavy weight, neutral-colored paper to bring with you to the interview.
Clothing
Select a professional, formal outfit that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Avoid wearing high-heeled shoes that you cannot walk in comfortably. Dress conservatively in neutral or dark colors. When in doubt, dress more formally than you think might be necessary. Suits offer a safe choice for men and women.
Transportation
Map your route to the interview and plan to arrive 15 minutes early. If you don't know exactly where the interview location is, do a test run to find it. If you will need public transportation, plan to take an early train or bus in case there is a delay.
Mock Interview
Most college and university career services centers offer mock interviews for students and alumni. If you have access to such a resource, take advantage of it to prepare for your interview and practice discussing your qualifications. The mock interviewer will give you tips and feedback at the end.
