Menopause is a stage of development experienced by mature women. During this time, they no longer experience their menstrual cycle and fertility ceases. Menopause is caused by gradual reduction in the production of reproductive hormones. For this reason, hormone replacement therapy is used to reduce the severity of symptoms.
Significance
According to the Mayo Clinic, hormone replacement therapy is the most effective method for treating menopause. It has been particularly effective in the treatment of hot flashes, the primary symptom of menopause.
Type
Estrogen is used primarily in the administration of hormone replacement therapy given that it is a naturally occurring hormone. Some women receive progestin, a synthetic progesterone hormone, or testosterone in addition to the estrogen.
Symptoms
Hormone replacement therapy is also effective in treating other menopause symptoms such as night sweats, vaginal dryness or anxiety. Symptoms vary by person.
Risks
The use of hormone replacement therapy does come with some risks, including blood clots, cancer and cardiovascular disease.
