According to the National Institutes of Health, restless leg syndrome, also known as RLS, is a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary urges to move the legs when at rest. The urge is often accompanied by uncomfortable sensations such as itching, burning, creeping or tugging within the legs. The most distinctive aspect of the condition is that trying to relax or lying down activates the symptoms. Consequently, most people with restless leg syndrome experience sleep problems, exhaustion and daytime fatigue. The causes of RLS are unknown in most cases. The disorder is diagnosed by evaluating the patient's symptoms and medical history. There are different ways to manage restless legs syndrome.
Step 1
Consume iron supplements. According to the Mayo Clinic, iron deficiency contributes to restless leg syndrome. Ask your physician for a blood test to determine your nutritional deficiencies. Typically, doctors suggest taking a multivitamin containing iron to alleviate symptoms. Your doctor will also identify the risks associated with taking dietary supplements in accordance with prescription medications.
Step 2
Eliminate or limit caffeine, smoking and drinking from your diet. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and stroke recommends avoiding caffeine, tobacco and alcohol because they are stimulants and sometimes aggravate RLS symptoms. Coffee, soft drinks, teas and any other caffeinated drink should be limited, especially close to bedtime. Test to see whether avoiding these substances helps your condition.
Step 3
Exercise and stretch to help relieve your RLS symptoms. Exercise reduces weight, improves blood circulation and lowers disease risk. According to the Restless Leg Syndrome Foundation, some patients have found that a moderate exercise program helps them sleep better. Work out during the daytime, and maintain a moderate intensity workout.
Step 4
Explore drug therapy with your physician. According to the Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation, dopamine, anti-convulsants, sleeping aids and pain relievers helps control symptoms of RLS. Examples of these are Mirapex, Requip and Sinemet. Talk with your physician to determine an individualized treatment plan.
Step 5
Reduce stress by participating in relaxing activities such as yoga, tai chi and meditative breathing. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, massaging the legs, taking a hot bath or using a heating pad has been reported to relieve RLS symptoms in some patients.
