A common result of post nasal drip is a constant cough, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology. Dr.Weil.com states that post nasal drip is caused by the common cold, allergies or a sinus infection and should be treated immediately to stop its effects on the body, such as coughing. In order to cure a cough resulting from post nasal drip, the patient needs to address the cause of the condition and treat it.

Definition

FamilyDoctor.org defines post nasal drip as the running of mucus out of the back of the nose into the throat. Although healthy people swallow mucus on a daily basis, it goes unnoticed because it is such a small amount.

Cause

When the sinuses become inflamed, mucus builds up in the cavity and then searches for a place to drain. The throat becomes irritated from mucous secretions, so the body attempts to clear the congestion with a cough, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology. Sinus inflammation is the result of irritation in the sinus cavity, commonly due to a viral infection, an allergic reaction, or a sinus infection.

Medical Treatment

According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, post nasal drip cough is treated based on the cause. For sinus infections, antibiotics may be prescribed to kill the infection. If allergies are the cause of the cough, FamilyDoctor.org recommends avoiding allergens and using over-the-counter medications such as antihistamines. Over-the counter decongestants and cough suppressants are used to treat post nasal drip cough symptoms. Decongestants reduce inflammation in the sinuses, enabling the nose to drain mucus properly. Cough suppressants block the cough reflex from responding.

Home Treatment

Dr.Weil.com recommends stopping the intake of all dairy products. Dairy products stimulate mucous membranes, causing the sinuses to become irritated. Nasal irrigation or a sinus wash can be helpful in treating post nasal drip cough. These systems use salt water solutions to cleanse and moisten the sinuses. Gargling with warm salt water to cleanse the back of the throat can provide relief from post nasal drip cough, as well.

Recommendations

The American Academy of Otolaryngology states that chronic post nasal drip cough may be the result of a more serious condition and should be evaluated by a doctor. Chronic post nasal drip cough may be the result of a chronic allergic condition, nasal polyps or chronic sinusitis. If a fever develops with post nasal drip coughing, medical advice should be sought.
