Fibromyalgia is a complex medical condition characterized by pain throughout the body and fatigue. Sufferers often have specific areas that are tender to the touch. The Mayo Clinic estimates that around one American in 50 has fibromyalgia; it is much more common in women. Cymbalta is a brand name prescription medication indicated for the treatment of fibromyalgia.

Effects of Fibromyalgia

The frequent pain associated with fibromyalgia is felt to limit restorative sleep. This leaves the individual ill-prepared to meet the needs of the day. The pain can lead to depression and an inability to perform tasks. Many sufferers undergo years of examinations and testing before a diagnosis of fibromyalgia is made. Medications such as Cymbalta can relieve the pain, tiredness and sleep difficulties related to this disorder.

Drug Identification

Cymbalta contains the active ingredient duloxetine hydrochloride. It is also used to treat depression, anxiety and nerve pain. Cymbalta is taken as a delayed-release oral capsule. Typical dosage for fibromyalgia is 30 mg per day for the first seven days of treatment, after which the dose is increased to 60 mg per day, explains the "2010 Lippincott's Nursing Drug Guide."

Side Effects

Common side effects of Cymbalta include excessive sweating, loss of appetite, dry mouth, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, excessive sleepiness, difficulty falling asleep, fatigue and dizziness. It can also cause sexual difficulties, including loss of sexual interest, abnormal orgasm, lack of orgasm, delayed ejaculation and erectile dysfunction. Cymbalta may increase the heart rate or blood pressure. The individual may feel irritable or agitated and develop a tremor. Blurry vision, vomiting, rash and hot flushes are also potential side effects. The medication can cause liver damage and, rarely, thoughts of suicide.

Stopping Cymbalta

Long-term usage of Cymbalta should not be suddenly stopped without physician approval. The drug's manufacturer advises that abrupt discontinuation may cause difficulty sleeping, nightmares, anxiety, dizziness, a feeling that the room is spinning, headache, excessive sweating and vomiting. The drug is usually tapered off over a period of two or more weeks.

Considerations

Cymbalta and other medications should only be one part of a treatment plan for fibromyalgia. It is also important to have adequate rest, exercise and a healthy diet. Stress should be kept at a manageable level. The Mayo Clinic urges fibromyalgia suffers to limit their daily caffeine usage.
