Rosacea is a dermatological problem that initially begins as a tendency to blush or flush easily, and gradually progresses into persistent redness. Although often treated with prescription medications, there are other options for treating this skin condition.

Topical Creams

Over-the-counter topical cortisone creams may be useful, as well as creams that contain retinoids or benzoyl peroxide, notes the American Academy of Dermatology. These creams can take several months of daily applications to produce any results.

Face Cleaning

Regular washing of parts of the skin affected by rosacea can also help relieve symptoms, reports MayoClinic.com. Patients should use gentle cleansers such as Cetaphil or Dove, and avoid touching or scratching their face, as this can lead to irritation.

Avoiding Triggers

Rosacea can also be treated by avoiding things that trigger flare-ups, states the National Rosacea Society. Patients should avoid direct sunlight and wear sunblock, as this is a common trigger. Other triggers reported by many rosacea sufferers include stress, hot weather, spicy foods, alcohol consumption, and some cosmetics and skin care products.
