Many people have turned to organic food as a replacement for conventionally grown food to avoid the toxins and chemicals in conventional meat and produce. The organic industry has been growing rapidly as a result. Although organic farming practices have been used for many years, the creation of the National Organic Program laid the foundation for what is currently categorized as organic food.
National Organic Program
The National Organic Program originated from the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 and was developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, or USDA. The National Organic Program sets and enforces standards for farming practices grown as organic agricultural products. These standards are also regulated by the USDA, so food items with the "Certified Organic" logo must be truly organically grown.
Organic Practices
You can eat an organically based diet to remove toxins from your system because organic produce, meat and poultry do not contain synthetic chemicals. Animals are raised without drugs, growth hormones and antibiotics; therefore, you avoid ingesting these chemicals when consuming organic meat and poultry. Organic agricultural practices prohibit synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, unnatural fertilizers, sewage sludge, which is sediment left from treated waste water, irradiation and genetically engineered plants.
Nutrients
Additionally, organic practices include crop rotation, leading to healthier soil rich in microorganisms that aid the plant in absorbing nutrients from the soil. More vitamin C, trace minerals such as iron and magnesium, and antioxidants are then available for your body to utilize. Organically raised poultry and grass-fed beef also eat an organic diet; therefore, the meat you consume from these animals contains higher levels of healthy enzymes to help you digest the protein and fat for energy.
Benefits
Because your body does not have the excess hormones, antibiotics, drugs, synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides, and food additives, it has fewer toxins to clear out. This is less taxing on your body, especially your liver, which is your body's filtration system. Your liver pulls toxins such as pesticide residues out of your bloodstream when you consume conventionally grown food, but when you eat organic food, you do not place the same stress on your liver. Additionally, toxins are stored in your adipose tissue, or your fat cells. This means the chemicals your liver does not filter out stay in your body. When you switch from eating conventional food to organic food, your body efficiently clears out the toxins, and your stress level decreases, leaving your healthier.
Considerations
Eating only organic food can help you detox your body, but working with a nutritionist, doctor or naturopathic practitioner can provide you with deeper knowledge and understanding about the benefits of organic food.
