Known for its extensive theme parks, resort hotels and colorful characters, Walt Disney World is arguably one of Florida's biggest attractions. Even with the many hotel options within the park, Disney World also caters to its tent camping and RVing visitors with Fort Wilderness Resort, a camping resort that offers both campsites and full-service cabins.
What is Fort Wilderness?
Fort Wilderness is a camping resort within Walt Disney World in Orlando. The campground consists of two areas: an RV and tent campground and a cabin area. Originally built in 1971, it is the only camping resort within the theme park and is located near the Magic Kingdom. The resort's environmentally responsible practices have earned it a Green Lodging Program designation, given to Florida lodging facilities which practice conservation and protection of natural resources.
Fort Wilderness Campground Accommodations
The Fort Wilderness Campground offers four different types of accommodations. The most basic site includes water and electric hookups and enough space in the site to accommodate two tents or one pop-up or van camper and one tent. Fort Wilderness' premium sites can accommodate big rig RVs and include full hookups with up to 50 amp electric service. All sites include cable TV hookups and wireless Internet for an additional fee.
Fort Wilderness Recreation
Though the Magic Kingdom is just a short walk away, Fort Wilderness Campground offers a variety of recreation opportunities. Fort Wilderness is home to Triple D Ranch, which provides guided horseback tours. The campground also has canals in which campers can fish, a 2.5-mile fitness trail, swimming pools and access to Bay Lake Beach. Fort Wilderness also has tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, as well as an archery range.
Fort Wilderness Campground Rates
For the 2010 season, Fort Wilderness' partial hookup sites, which have water and basic electric service, are $44 per night. A full hookup site, which can accommodate one full RV and a tent, is $59 per night, while a preferred site, which is in a premium location in the campground, is $64 per night. Fort Wilderness' premium sites, which not only accommodate the largest RVs, but also have an extra-large concrete pad, rent for $74 per night.
Fort Wilderness Cabins
The Fort Wilderness Resort not only has campsites but also full-service cabins. The cabins include full kitchens with all dishes, cookware and utensils included, sleeping accommodations for six people, daily housekeeping and a full bathroom. Wheelchair cabins are available for campers who use wheelchairs. For the 2010 season, the cabins, with all these amenities, rent for $270 per night.
