According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity in Americans, from 1985 to 2009, has dramatically increased. In 2009, only Colorado and the District of Columbia had less than 20 percent obesity throughout their populations. So it's not surprising that many states have weight loss camps--places where individuals can spend more than just a few hours a week striving to reach their weight loss goals.
Famous Weight Loss Camp
NBC TV's "The Biggest Loser" has brought substantial attention to Americans' overweight epidemic in the past few years. Ivins, Utah, is home to The Biggest Loser Resort at Fitness Ridge. The Biggest Loser Resort is a boot camp for weight loss that offers a plethora of fitness and nutritional guidance.
Classes that include water aerobics, cardio, kickboxing and step, healthful cooking and proper nutrition make the Biggest Loser Resort a well-rounded, all-encompassing weight loss camp. Hiking is available, because of the camp's mountainous location, and teens between 14 and 17 years of age are welcomed with an adult.
Live-In Weight Loss Camp
Utah's Live-In Fitness Camp offers one-, two-, three-, four- and eight-week all-inclusive combination weight loss packages. Guests enjoy private living accommodations, 5 to 7 hours of exercise daily, nutrition-focused dining and life coaching. You can even bring your small pet along with you to this weight loss camp. For guests who have a hard time paying for the camp, there are financing options available.
Youth Weight Loss Camp
The National Academy of Fitness, Paradise Canyon Campus, is a Utah weight loss camp specifically for young women. Since guests are usually in school, they have teachers on-site. The program is a combination of lifestyle education--nutrition, cooking and wellness--and intensive exercise. Ladies keep a weight loss journal throughout their experience and work hand-in-hand with motivational coaches.
There is a summer camp option for young women who cannot come for an extended period of time during the school year. Activities at the National Academy of Fitness include swimming, biking, hiking, gym work--and once a week, there is an activity planned that's just for fun.
Weight Loss Spa
Spas with a weight loss and fitness focus are a growing trend. Red Mountain Resort and Spa in St. George, Utah is just such a spa. There are several options for indoor activity--personal trainers, group aerobics classes and cardio theaters. There are guided daily hikes and outdoor activities, including swimming, golf and rock climbing.
There is a café, full-service restaurant and room service available, all of which focus on healthful dining.
What sets Red Mountain Resort and Spa apart from other Utah weight loss camps is Sagestone Spa. There is a sauna, in-room treatments are available and the spa offers a bevy of signature treatments. Pamper yourself while losing weight.
Boot Camps
Boot camps are one of the most popular methods for shedding unwanted pounds quickly. Utah has plenty of boot camps from which to choose.
Boot Camp 4 U has two Utah locations, Clearfield and Bountiful. There are certified personal trainers on staff. They offer both indoor and outdoor activities. Their six-week programs combine individual training and group exercise.
Some boot camps are affiliated with a single trainer, like Get Living Fit and Life Wellness Personal Training. At the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Monday through Thursday, boot camp participants engage in activities such as circuit training, cardio work and strength training.
