Backpacking through Alaska is one of the main reasons so many adventurers head to the northernmost state. While there are a number of hiking trails and resorts to choose from, backpacking is one of the only ways to see the beauty and wildness of the state. The mountains, valleys, glaciers and tundra plains are often accessible only by backpacking, and as long as you are physically fit and crave adventure, Alaska has plenty to offer.

Geography

The geography of Alaska is different depending upon which part of the state you are in. It can range from flat, tundra plains to heavily-forested slopes to glacier valleys, craggy passes through the mountains. As such, backpacking in Alaska can be an adventure no matter where you decide to go, because the terrain is so diverse. While one day might be spent taking a pleasurable stroll through a grassy valley, the next day of the backpacking trip could be hiking up the face of a mountain that is completely covered in ice, or crossing one of the many rivers and streams that course throughout the state.

Gear

Backpacking gear is essential to any successful backpacking trek into Alaska. The most important piece of equipment in any backpacker's repertoire is hiking boots. A good pair of boots keep your feet warm, dry and comfortable, and when you are spending a day in and day out hiking the trails, boots can mean the difference between an enjoyable trip and a nightmare. A good backpack is also important, as are a tent, sleeping bag, cooking utensils if you plan on being out for an extended period of time, and the proper clothing depending on whether you are heading into bad weather.

Timing

The timing of your trip is important if you have a specific type of backpacking trip in mind. The winter season is continually cold and snowy, and makes certain areas of Alaska nearly impassable for all but the most dedicated of backpackers. Summertime generally brings the best conditions in terms of backpacking because of balmy weather and ideal conditions for heading out in the country. Personal preference will dictate whether your trip is in the winter or in the summer.

Length of Trek

The length of your backpacking trip will also determine where you go in Alaska. Certain sections of the state can be hiked to within a day or two, but there are other parts of Alaska that require a week of hiking or more to see, given that there are no roads in or out. Planning ahead is vital if you have any desire to see the most remote locations of Alaska.

Backcountry

The backcountry of Alaska is not the same as the backcountry of many other states. Wild animals exist, as do harsh conditions, and unless you are in peak physical condition and are traveling with companions and firearms, the farthest reaches of the state should be left alone. However, some of the most beautiful sections of Alaska are located in the most dangerous regions for humans, but planning ahead with that in mind is essential to enjoying the backpacking adventure without getting hurt.
