Complaining about boredom should not be a problem for Milwaukee youth. Kids who live in the largest city in Wisconsin can stay busy all year long with a myriad of sports, arts and recreational activities in the city. There are events scheduled every month of the year by Milwaukee's museums, athletic leagues, religious institutions and the municipal government.
Museums
There are over a dozen museums in the Milwaukee area. They include venerable institutions like the Milwaukee Museum of Art and those that cater to youth such as the Betty Brinn Children's Museum. The museums offer year-round events for children of all ages including interactive exhibits, play activities, music and theater shows, learning programs and other hands-on fun for kids. For youth who are interested in art-related careers, the Milwaukee Museum of Art has a Junior Docent program.
Soccer
From youth soccer clubs to area school teams, kids who are interested in competitive soccer can participate on many levels in Milwaukee. Local schools have fall and spring seasons. Area soccer leagues and clubs play during the fall and spring seasons and have camps during the summer. For youth who are serious about developing their soccer skills, the Milwaukee Kickers Club has a youth soccer academy and provides individual instruction.
Theater
Opportunities to perform on stage or learn behind-the-scenes production duties are available for Milwaukee area youth. Youth programs at area theaters include a full season of children's productions in genres such as musicals, drama and comedy. Programs such as the Milwaukee Youth Theatre also offer summers camps where children can take acting and dance classes. The group also has programs for Girl Scouts to earn participation badges. At the end of auditions, rehearsals and camps, the entire family can enjoy the youth theater productions in area venues.
Summer Camps and Activities
From camps sponsored by local universities to vacation bible schools at local churches, summer can be a busy time for youth in Milwaukee. Local private schools and recreation centers also sponsor summer camps. Some camps are general day camps that offer a wide range of indoor and outdoor recreational activities while others, like the sports and academic camps at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, are specialized.
Biking
The county of Milwaukee works to make the urban area more bike friendly through its Bicycle and Pedestrian Task Force. Members of the group patrol the many kid- and family-friendly biking trails in the city. Areas like the Hank Aaron State Trail not only provide a paved paths but also host family-friendly events such as fun runs, walks, Earth Day events and community planting days. There are also mountain biking trails and tracks for BMX racing in the area.
