People remove navel piercings for a variety of reasons, from simply being tired of them irritation during contact sports. Because a navel piercing takes from six to 12 months to completely heal, removing the jewelry from a piercing less than six months old can cause the hole to close. If you think your navel piercing has become infected, consult your piercer. He might advise you to leave the jewelry in until you're healed to prevent an infection from becoming trapped inside a closed piercing.
Step 1
Wash the piercing and your hands with antimicrobial soap and warm water. Use clean paper towels to dry.
Step 2
Grip the bottom ball of a curved barbell with one hand. With the other hand, twist the upper ball to your right to unscrew it.
Step 3
Pull down on the bottom ball to slide the jewelry out of your navel.
Step 4
Grip the bottom of a captive bead ring with one hand, if your piercer used a ring instead of a barbell. Push the bead sideways with the other hand until it pops out. Turn the ring vertically until it comes out of your navel.
Step 5
Soak your navel with a sea salt solution made from 1/4 tsp. non-iodized sea salt and 1 cup warm water. Use disposable cups and soak once daily for 15 minutes. Continue washing with antimicrobial soap as per your piercer's instructions until the piercing is healed.
