People who suffer from a buildup of wax in the inner ear will tell you it is one of the worst feelings in the world. If you suffer from this type of buildup, you may be looking for relief. One method is to use a solution of water and vinegar on your ear. While you would be hard-pressed to find a doctor who condones performing any type of home treatments on your ear canal, if you are looking for home relief for blocked or dirty ears this is a remedy that is safe and can be effective, notes Douglas Hoffman, M.D.

Step 1

Mix water, vinegar and peroxide in a small microwave safe bowl and microwave for approximately 15 seconds. You want the mixture to be as close to body temperature as possible. When you remove the bowl, mix the solution again to evenly distribute the heat and test the water with the back of your hand.

Step 2

Tilt your head so that the affected ear is facing up. Gently pull down on your earlobe to open the canal.

Step 3

Fill an ear syringe with the solution. Inject 2 to 3 drops of the solution into your ear with the ear syringe and hold still for approximately two minutes. During this time you may hear cracking or popping as the solutions loosens the ear wax.

Step 4

Hold the towel over your ear and turn your head so the affected ear is now facing down allowing the solution to drain completely.

Step 5

Repeat nightly until the pressure is relieved. If you experience any pain stop immediately and if the infection or blockage does not improve contact your physician.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you experience any dizziness the solution may be too hot or too cold.
  • Do not try this if you have a history of ear infections, swimmers ear or any damage to your ear drum. The inner ear is a delicate area and it's easy to do more harm than good when you take ear care into your own hands. Be extremely careful when performing any type of procedures on your ear.

Things You'll Need

  • ½ cup distilled white vinegar
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 cup hydrogen peroxide
  • Small microwave safe bowl
  • Ear syringe
