Diovan HCT is a combination medication which contains both valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide. Valsartian is a medication in a class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists, It works to lower blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic medication used to help rid the body of excess fluid to lower blood pressure. This medication may be prescribed in conjunction with diet and exercise to maintain cardiac health. There are side effects associated with Diovan HCT, some of which are specific to males.
Headache and Dizziness
Men taking Diovan HCT may experience headache and dizziness. These symptoms may subside over time as the body adjusts to this medication. Men should use caution while driving, operating dangerous machinery, and completing tasks which may be dangerous until they know how Diovan HCT will affect them. In some cases, Diovan HCT may cause a drop in blood pressure. Symptoms can include headache, dizziness, fatigue and lightheadedness. According to PDRHealth, low blood pressure is most likely to happen if a person is on a low-salt diet, is receiving dialysis, has heart problems, gets sick with vomiting or diarrhea, or drinks alcohol. Men who develop symptoms of low blood pressure should consult their cardiologist prior to taking another dose of medication.
Erectile Dysfunction
According to MayoClinic, erectile dysfunction, or impotence, is the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough for sex. Occasional erectile dysfunction may not necessarily be a cause for concern; however when it begins to impact daily lifestyle, a physician should be consulted. They may recommend a change in blood pressure medication or dosage, or may prescribe a medication intended to treat impotence.
Flu-like Symptoms
Some men may develop flu-like symptoms while taking Diovan HCT. Symptoms can include cough, nasal congestion, respiratory tract infection, restlessness and sinus congestion. These side effects may lessen over time as the body gets used to daily treatment with Diovan HCT. Humidified air, saline nasal spray and throat lozenges may help lessen these effects. If these symptoms occur in conjunction with swollen lymph glands, fever, difficulty breathing, wheezing and fatigue, it may be a sign of an infection which requires medical treatment.
