Hair loss can be a very traumatic, difficult experience for many men and women, and in many cases, the causes can be confusing and hard to diagnose even after consulting a medical professional. However, there are some home remedies that can help to fight hair loss. These home remedies should be discussed with your doctor before starting treatment, however, especially if you are using prescription treatments or other drugs, which may interact negatively.
Saw Palmetto, Vitamin E Oil and Olive Oil
According to Julie Gabriel, author of "The Green Beauty Guide: Your Essential Resource to Organic and Natural Skin Care, Hair Care, Makeup, and Fragrances," a mixture of saw palmetto, vitamin E oil and olive oil can be used to help slow hair loss due to changes in hormones. To make this mixture, combine ½ tsp. saw palmetto, ½ tsp. vitamin E oil and 2 tbsp. olive oil in a small container and stir to combine. Massage the oil onto the scalp and leave it on for 20 minutes with a towel around your neck. Rinse your hair and scalp with lukewarm water, and wash with a very gentle shampoo and conditioner. This treatment can be used daily as long as it doesn't bother your skin or scalp. Unused portions can be kept in a cool, dark place for one month.
Nettle Root Essential Oil, Rose Essential Oil and Jojoba Oil
According to Ann Worwood, author of "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy," a mixture of nettle root essential oil, rose essential oil and jojoba oil can help to fight hair loss due to hormone changes. To make this mixture, combine ½ tsp. nettle root essential oil, ½ tsp. rose essential oil and 10 tsp. jojoba oil in a small bottle and shake to combine. Massage approximately ¼ of the mixture onto your scalp for four to five minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water and washing with your regular shampoo and conditioner. This treatment can be used once per day as long as it doesn't bother your scalp or cause irritation to the skin. Unused portions of this mixture can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 60 days for later use.
Green Tea and Lime Juice Hair Rinse
According to Bill Gottlieb, author of "Alternative Cures: More than 1,000 of the Most Effective Natural Home Remedies," a mixture of green tea and fresh lime juice can be consumed daily to help slow hair loss caused by hormonal changes. To make this mixture, steep one green tea bag in a 6 oz. of hot water for 4 to 5 minutes before stirring in 1 tbsp. freshly squeezed lime juice. Let the mixture cool to a tolerable temperature and drink before each meal. This remedy can be used up to three times daily as long as it doesn't have any adverse side effects. Larger portions of this mixture can be made in advance and stored in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours.
