A transition to day care is sometimes challenging for a toddler, especially if she is accustomed to staying home with a parent all day. Your toddler's personality plays a large role in the ease of the transition. Outgoing toddlers may jump into day care with ease, while shy toddlers are likely to have more difficulty with the separation. A gradual transition to the day care setting helps your toddler build up trust and comfort with her new caregivers.

Step 1

Talk to your toddler about the transition to day care in terms he can understand. Keep a positive tone about the conversation to build up excitement for day care.

Step 2

Visit the selected day care center with your toddler so she can meet the teachers and other kids while checking out the environment. Let her know ahead of time that you are only visiting.

Step 3

Discuss the day care center after the visit. Talk about all of the exciting things you saw, his teacher and all of the entertaining things he will get to do at day care.

Step 4

Purchase any day care supplies, such as a bag or sleeping mat, with your toddler's help. This helps your toddler get excited about the upcoming transition to day care.

Step 5

Establish a morning routine that allows plenty of time to get ready and spend some time with your toddler. The routine provides security for your child and may make the transition easier.

Step 6

Pack a security item for your toddler to take to day care. Choose a favorite stuffed animal, blanket or other special item. Let the day care staff know about the item as a source of comfort for your child.

Step 7

Schedule the first day of care in the facility on a day when you don't have to work or be anywhere. Stay with your toddler for about an hour to establish the environment as a safe place. IParenting recommends scheduling this time later in the morning to avoid the busy drop-off time.

Step 8

Leave your child for a shortened day after your joint stay. Help your toddler get settled into the day care center. Hand your toddler to the caregiver once you are ready to leave. Keep the goodbye short, walking away even if your toddler cries.

Step 9

Leave your toddler for a full day at the child care facility after a few shortened transition days. Keep your goodbyes short every day to teach your toddler that crying won't get you to stay.

Step 10

Pick up your toddler at the same time every day. This establishes a routine and assures your child that you will return.
