Fiberglass is a man-made material that is produced by spinning glass into fine threads. This substance is also known as glass wool. Fiberglass is commonly found in home and building insulation because of its ability to prevent the transfer of heat. It is also used as a sound-absorbing material in cars and airplanes, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health website. If your child has come in contact with fiberglass, there are simple methods to remove the fibers from the skin.
Step 1
Wrap about 12 inches of clear packing tape around your fingers with the sticky side out. Gently pat your child's skin with the tape to pull out fiberglass splinters. Fiberglass that is not deeply embedded into the skin will easily adhere to the tape.
Step 2
Warm hair removal wax in a microwave for 10 seconds. Spread the wax on your child's skin over the fiberglass splinters.
Step 3
Place the cloth that came with the hair removal wax over the wax on your child's skin. Turn on a hair dryer and blow warm air over the cloth, working in a back and forth motion to evenly heat the wax beneath.
Step 4
Pull the cloth off of your child's skin in an even motion. Do not pull off the cloth in a quick motion, which could injure your child's skin. According to the Children's Hospital of Denver, this will remove most fiberglass splinters.
