With the joys of being a new mom comes the leftover "baby fat." It may only take nine months to gain this weight, but it can take even longer to return to pre-pregnancy size. This can put a damper on life as a new mom because it may cause stress or be discouraging. Thankfully, there are ways to speed up "baby fat" loss and get new moms back to looking good and enjoying motherhood.

Step 1

Breastfeed instead of using baby formula. This is healthier for the baby and can also help speed up weight loss for mom. According to La Leche League, a nonprofit organization that promotes breastfeeding, moms can lose weight just by breastfeeding. Without additional diet or exercise, new moms can lose 1.3 to 1.6 lbs. a month just by breastfeeding. The energy it takes to make breast milk speeds up the weight-loss process. Breastfeeding will burn anywhere from 600 to 800 calories per day.

Step 2

Plan a well-balanced diet. Eat plenty of fiber, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Incorporate lean proteins and low-fat dairy products to ensure proper vitamins and nutrients. Since life as a new mom can be hectic, choose fruits, nuts, and low-fat yogurts as on-the-go snacks.

Step 3

Get the heart pumping. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends moderate intensity cardiovascular exercise for at least an hour a day most days of the week. This will help speed up the weight-loss process. Try going for a brisk walk with the stroller. Jump rope or run up and the down stairs as baby takes a nap. Take advantage of every opportunity to stay active and burn calories.
