Goal setting is beneficial in achieving any accomplishment. Regardless of age, students who are taught this skill can better identify goals in life and can cultivate the discipline required to accomplish their goals. Goal setting can be simple or complex--once the skill is mastered, it can help to ensure success.

Gives Hope

Students may encounter people or media that send a message that "anything is possible." At times it can feel disingenuous and often has the opposite effect. Goal setting connects students with their hopes or aspirations in a real way. Because they can control, to a large extent, whether they accomplish their goal or not, goal setting can be empowering and provide hope.

Teaches Organization and Time Management

Goal setting requires organization skills. Students must think about the necessary steps to accomplish a goal and determine the order and schedule for accomplishing those steps. Students must use their time management skills. Achieving and maintaining organization and utilizing good time management ensure successful goal setting.

Teaches Responsibility

Goal setting must be actively managed to ensure its success. When things don't go as planned, the student must adjust her plan to account for these unexpected events. This requires her to take a mature approach and to become adaptable. Goal setting requires her to take responsibility for her goal and take the actions necessary to ensure that it is accomplished.
