Michigan is a campers dream with over 11,000 lakes and thousands more rivers and streams that allow for water sports like swimming, kayaking, canoeing and white water rafting. Beaverton is located in the center of Michigan, about 30 miles west of I-75. There are three main campgrounds within a few minutes from the city: Tobacco River Campground, Lost Haven Campground and Calhoun Campground.

Things to Do

Ross Lake Park, Wilson State Park, Chippewa River and Gladwin State Park are all located within a 5- to 30-minute drive from Beaverton. There is no shortage of things to do here, especially when it comes to water sports. Kayaking, canoeing, white water rafting, swimming, boating and hiking are just a few of the popular choices. Beaverton itself is a small township with a population of approximately 1,000 people. The real pull of this area is the outdoor recreation.

For the Hikers

Wilson State Park and the Guernsey Creek Trail offer hiking enthusiasts many trails for exploring the area. Guernsey Creek Trail is approximately 14 miles long, so there are opportunities to do a short or long hike on this trail. Lost Haven Campground is located nearby and offers daily, weekly, monthly and seasonal rates. The sites are grassy and every site offers electricity and water.

On the Water

Campers can spend the day swimming in or canoeing on the Tobacco River. Nestled along the river is the Tobacco River Campground, which offers camping on the bank of the river, as well as spots for more modern campers, like motor homes and RVs. It's known for its rustic atmosphere, where you can camp underneath tall trees. A camping store is located on site and carries fishing and camping gear, as well as treats like ice cream.

White Water Rafting

The Chippewa River is only a few miles from Beaverton and is considered a lower-level river for white water rafting, so it is a great place for beginners to try the sport. The stretch of river for white water rafting is only 0.1 miles long, so you won't be spending hours or an entire day on it. Canoeing is also a popular activity on calmer areas of the river. Calhoun Campground is a self-registration campground located near the river.

Day Trips

Lost Haven Campground and Calhoun Campground are only a few minutes away from Ross Lake Park. This park doesn't have camping, but it offers visitors a beach and swimming area, a boat launch and areas for picnicking. It's the perfect place for families camping in the Beaverton area to spend the day.
