Vermont is known for its outdoor recreation, and there are many clubs that help residents and visitors take advantage of various athletic activities in the state. For people of all ages, abilities, training needs and desires to workout indoors or outdoors, the fitness clubs throughout the state will help you achieve your fitness goals or simply provide your workout with an extra boost.
Specialty Training
Ontrack Fitness is a club designed to help you “diversify” your training and caters to cyclists, short and long distance runners and skiers through a monthly membership plan. If you are conditioning for an event or you want to add intensity to your workout, you are likely to find personal training, coaching classes for additional fees. Regular membership plans include a gym equipped with various cardio and weight machines to suit your needs. For those who are in need of rehabilitation, Ontrack provides physical therapy and massage therapy to help with your recovery process. This club is located in Burlington, Vermont, and the gym hours vary, depending on the season (see "Resources").
Versatile Workouts
Vermont Sport and Fitness Club provides members with an all-around fitness experience, including tennis, racquetball and squash, along with group fitness classes, personal training and a gym for you to work at your own pace on cardio and weight lifting machines. If you are interested in playing racquet sports, you can participate in a league, take lessons or reserve a court to leisurely hit around your tennis ball. Kids can also take advantage of lessons catered to them, as well as a yearly week-long tennis camp. If you are looking to stay fit through cardio and or strength-training, you can sign up for different classes, such as Zumba, indoor cycling and yoga. Open Almost All of the Time
Planet Fitness is a franchise, and Vermont is home to some of the clubs. Head to Essex Junction or to South Burlington to experience a club that’s open 24 hours ever day, Monday through Friday and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the weekends. With no start-up fees and a monthly dues of $19.99 per month (as of August 2010), the club saves money by not having certain amenities, such as juice bars, salespeople and childcare options. However, there are plenty of amenities when it comes to the gym area, including state-of-the art cardio and weight lifting equipment.
Gyms for All Ages
Sports and Fitness Edge has club locations in Essex, South Burlington and Williston, Vermont. The emphasis is on group fitness, individual fitness, which can be achieved through personal or on-your-own training. Kids ages 5 to 10 can partake in fun exercise activities through tennis, climbing, swimming and after-school care that includes gym, sport and tennis time, field trips, homework club, along with puzzles and games. Seniors, ages 60 and up can take part in a various activities—from basketball, golf, indoor cycling and tennis, to gentle Pilates, Salsa, Tai Chi and Senior Stretch, to name a few (see "Resources").
For Mixed Martial Arts
Combat Fitness provides different classes for cardio training and Martial Arts. Located in Winooski, Vermont, you can take your fitness regimen to a different level with exercises that are both ancient and will help you attain your fitness goals. Try Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, Kickboxing or yoga. Kids can also come to take Martial Arts classes here.
