When you go camping with your kids--turning to nature and leaving most of the conveniences of modern life behind--you create memories that last a lifetime. If you provide fun foods for children and allow them to get involved in the cooking, you'll provide even more fond memories. Work together to make a sweet-filled banana in hot coals, to roast hot dogs over an open fire or to make pizza without an oven--experiences neither of you will ever forget.

Banana Boats

Bring along bananas and sweet fillings such as chocolate chips, chopped walnuts or miniature marshmallows for food that's fun to make. Leave the skin on the banana and cut a slit in the inside curve of the banana. Kids can then press their desired sweet fillings into the slit, enclose the banana in a double layer of aluminum foil, and then place the banana on the hot coals of your campfire. Let the banana cook for eight to ten minutes before removing it from the coals. Then set it aside to cool a little before opening the foil and enjoying a real camping treat.

Stick Roasted Hot Dogs

When roasting hot dogs over the open fire, the fun begins before the cooking even starts. First, children must set out in search of a perfect roasting stick. The stick should ideally be about three-feet long and green. The length of the stick allows the cook to stand farther back from the flames, and a green stick resists catching on fire. You will need to help prepare the stick by removing the bark from the end of the stick and adding a dull point to the end to help the hot dog slide onto the stick. Once kids have found and prepared the perfect stick, give them wieners to slide onto the stick and allow them to hold the stick over the fire until the hot dog is plump and cooked through.

Pizza

You don't need an oven to make this kid-friendly meal. Your children can cook their very own pizzas using a cast-iron pie cooker, nonstick spray, bread, pizza sauce, toppings and the campfire. Grease the sides of the pie cooker with the non-stick cooking spray and place a slice of bread inside the cooker. Add a small amount of pizza sauce and let kids pile their own toppings, such as mozzarella or pepperoni, onto the sauce-covered bread. Add a second piece of bread on top of the toppings and close the pie cooker. Cook over a hot campfire for 10 to 15 minutes until the cheese is melted.
