According to the originators of the Dr. Bernstein Diet, this weight-loss plan is different from many others because it doesn't focus on fads or overly restrictive meal plans, and supports overall health. The Dr. Bernstein Diet claims that you can lose about 5 lbs. per week without exercise, which suggests that calorie levels are kept quite low on this plan. Consult a doctor before beginning any weight-loss plan.
Tuna
According to the weight-loss information website Every Diet, tuna is on the accepted food list for the Dr. Bernstein Diet. This is likely because tuna is low in calories, and Every Diet claims that the typical calorie allotment on this diet plan is between 800 and 1,350 calories per day. Tuna is high in protein, contains no carbohydrates and is low in fat. Protein intake is important when you're losing weight because it can help keep you feeling full and may promote superior weight loss--research from the October 2004 issue of the "Journal of the American College of Nutrition" found that evidence suggests that high-protein diets increase weight and fat loss compared to low-protein diets.
Protein Bars
The Dr. Bernstein Diet offers a number of flavored protein bars for those who lead active lifestyles, travel often or don't have time to prepare food at mealtimes. These protein bars contain 15 g of protein each, which is about the same amount as you'd find in two eggs. Each bar contains 150 calories, but the bars contain just 1 g of fiber and 10 g of sugar. Sugar may increase your appetite when dieting, while fiber helps you feel full. If you find that sugar increases your food cravings, seek out a different snack.
Cheese
According to Diet.com, cheese is an acceptable food on the Dr. Bernstein Diet. Cheese is often restricted on other diet programs because it is high in fat. However, cheese is also high in protein, which means it may encourage weight loss by suppressing your appetite. However, the high fat content means it is high in calories, so eating too much may push you over your calorie limit.
Soy Flour
Diet.com explains that the Dr. Bernstein Diet focuses on reducing carbohydrate intake while keeping protein and fat content high. Unlike wheat flour, soy flour contains moderate levels of carbohydrates, and is high in fiber and protein. Using soy flour may enable you to eat baked goods that would otherwise be considered too high in carbohydrates for the Dr. Bernstein Diet.
