Skelaxin is a medication in a class of drugs known as muscle relaxants. According to Drugs.com, Skelaxin is used together with rest and physical therapy to treat discomfort associated with acute skeletal muscle conditions such as pain or injury. It works by blocking pain receptors in the brain to provide relief. There are some side effects associated with Skelaxin.
Dizziness and Drowsiness
Skelaxin may cause dizziness and drowsiness in some patients. These side effects may be temporary and lessen over time as the body adjusts to this medication. Patients should use caution while driving, operating heavy machinery, or completing tasks which require one to be awake and alert. Cold or allergy medicine, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, depression or anxiety can add to sleepiness caused by Skelaxin, explains Drugs.com. The use of alcohol should be avoided while taking this medication, as it may increase these side effects.
Headache
Patients taking Skelaxin may develop headache. If headache becomes bothersome, a physician should be consulted regarding the use of an over-the-counter pain medication such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen for the occasional relief of headache pain and discomfort. Headache that becomes severe or persistent should be reported to a doctor.
Stomach Discomfort
Skelaxin may cause stomach discomfort in some users. Symptoms can include mild nausea, vomiting and upset stomach, says Drugs.com. Taking this medication with food or milk may help to lessen stomach discomfort. Small dietary changes such as adhering to a bland diet and eating smaller meals more often may be helpful in alleviating symptoms. Those who experience severe or persistent vomiting can be at risk for developing dehydration and additional complications and should report this symptoms to their physician.
Skin Rash
A skin rash can occur while taking Skelaxin. This rash may or may not cause itching and discomfort. It should be brought to the attention of a physician. They may recommend the use of a medicated skin cream which contains cortisone for the relief of mild itching and discomfort. If rash becomes severe, a change in medication may be recommended.
