Everybody has a a unique way of flirting, so sometimes it can be difficult to know if a guy is interested in you. When you first meet a person, it's difficult to read his verbal and nonverbal cues, and you could easily mistake a friendly personality for flirtation. However, you can look for a few basic flirting characteristics. You then can determine if you should continue flirting with the guy, or if he isn't really sending you any signals.

Step 1

Watch for frequent eye contact. Registered nurse Susan Bradley, who teaches flirting workshops, emphasizes that at least three to five seconds of eye contact is ideal for flirting, according to Discovery Health. Both men and women use prolonged eye contact to flirt prior to a physical or verbal approach. Be wary of shorter eye contact, because this could just mean he is glancing around the room, and he might not actually be interested in you.

Step 2

Listen for compliments and personal observations as conversation starters, registered nurse Bradley recommends. If a guy compliments your smile or hair, or if he asks where you got your outfit, he is flirtatiously trying to start a conversation. Try to keep the conversation going. Don't just reply with a simple "thanks."

Step 3

Observe his body language. If you're trying to talk to a guy, he will naturally begin to lean toward you if he is trying to flirt, according to Discovery Health.

Step 4

Look for physical interaction. A guy who is flirting with you will find excuses to interact physically. If he places his hand on the small of your back, or touches your arm, he's probably interested in you.

Step 5

Look for acts of generosity and friendliness, especially toward your friends. A flirtatious guy will always want to make himself seem generous and kindhearted. He won't risk looking cheap or rude by ignoring your friends. If a guy buys your girlfriends a round of drinks, this is a positive sign. There's no need to get jealous or assume he is actually interested in your friends. According to "Cosmopolitan," flirtatious men will try to learn more about you through your friends.
