Sitka, one of Alaska's common cruise ship destinations, can accommodate active and health-conscious travelers' interests with both recreational and educational exploration opportunities. You will only be limited by the time you have on shore, as Sitka boasts excursions from sea kayaking to wildlife and cultural tours, further enlightening your knowledge about the location you are visiting.

Fishing

According to the Alaska Website, Sitka "boasts the shortest rod-hour to catch ration for king salmon" in all of Alaska. That means that you may spend your entire day wrestling these powerful fish onto the boat, which can be an exhausting affair when the fish are biting. Make sure your charter will help process and ship your catch back home.

Kayaking

Sitka kayaking is unique to other kayaking experiences in that you will first be brought to a remote "floating camp" by boat before starting the paddling. Other areas begin kayaking trips in town and along heavily trafficked rivers. Depending on the tour you go on, the paddling may be within the sheltered waterways of the Sitka harbor, the islands and sometimes even into the wild Sitka Sound.

Raptor Center

Make your way to the Raptor Center to learn about the native raptors. The Raptor Center is a non-profit organization, and much of their focus is on the rehabilitation of bald eagles and other native raptors. Once the birds have been treated and are ready, they are reintroduced to the wild. Also, tour companies often combine the Raptor Center with Tlingit Tribal tours.

Cultural Tours

With a native (Tlingit) and Russian American past, you can choose from tours that highlight one or both of these cultures. Sites include the Sitka Historic Park with its Interpretive Center and museum, where you can learn about the native history and culture. Alternatively, you can choose a tour that visits the Russian Districts and the Russian Orthodox Church.

Wildlife and Scenic Tours

The wildlife tours in Sitka provide native wildlife education generally enjoyed from a boat. One popular wildlife tour is Sitka's Wild Paradise Adventure, an intimate tour in which the captain discusses Alaska's natural history and wildlife. Among the possibilities are puffins, sea lions and whales; occasionally, you will see bears meandering along the coast. Another popular wildlife tour is the Sea Otter Marine Wildlife Quest, which teaches about the aforementioned wildlife, yet with a particular focus on sea otters.
