A skim board is a short, typically wooden board used to ride the receding waves at the beach. Successfully riding the skim board requires good balance and timing, both of which you learn after a bit of practice. A flat beach with few rocks or shells at the level of the tide is best for beginners to learn on. While any type of beachwear is appropriate for skim boarding, you may desire a wetsuit or rash guard for upper body protection in case of falls.
Step 1
Hold the skim board with both hands. Grip the board midway down each side.
Step 2
Position the board at the right side of your body if you are right-handed, or at the left side of your body if you are left-handed.
Step 3
Watch the tide ebb and flow for a short while, learning the timing of the waves. Ideally, you should drop your board onto the water the moment the tide begins to recede.
Step 4
Run toward the water at a 45-degree angle from about 10 feet away.
Step 5
Drop your skim board flat into the receding water. The board will float and continue to follow your path due to the board's inertia, so continue to run alongside the board.
Step 6
Jump onto the board with your non-dominant foot in front--your left foot if you are right-handed and your right foot if you are left-handed. Point your toes toward one side of the board as you would if riding a surfboard.
Step 7
Keep your weight on your front foot and extend your arms outward to maintain balance. Continue to ride the skim board until it slows to a stop.
