Cataracts--typically a condition associated with the senior population--is characterized by a clouding of the eye's lens. Affecting over 20 million individuals, this disorder progresses slowly. A person's vision is not impacted during the initial stages. Over time, however, sufferers will notice blurred, impaired or loss of vision and a "halo" may appear around objects.

Risk Factors

To prevent cataracts naturally it is important to know the risk factors associated with this disorder. Doing so will help reduce your chances of developing cataracts. Some of the more common risk factors are age, diabetes, excessive alcohol consumption and sun exposure, smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, a family history of cataracts, long-term use of steroids or anti-inflammatory medications, such as prednisone, radiation exposure, undergoing eye surgery or having a prior eye injury or irritation.

Care for Your Eyes

Taking good care of your eyes is important for preventing cataracts naturally. Routine eye exams are one of the best tools for discovering cataracts in their beginning stages. Those younger than 60 years of age should visit their eye doctor every two years and those over 60 years of age should go annually. Donning sunglasses also may ward off cataracts. Glasses that block the sun's UVA and UVB rays serve as sunscreen for the eyes and should be worn any time you are outside regardless of whether the sun is out. Prescription lenses should shield your eyes from UV rays as well.

Antioxidants

Increasing the amount of antioxidants in your diet can be effective when it comes to naturally preventing cataracts. Fruits and vegetables are not only great sources of vitamins and nutrients, they also are packed with antioxidants, which are useful in protecting the eyes from cataracts. Fruits--both dried and fresh--such as, berries, red grapes, oranges, plums, peaches and apricots, are laden with antioxidants. So are vegetables, such as broccoli, tomatoes, garlic, spinach, red and green peppers and squash. Antioxidants can be found in soy, whole grains and chocolate as well. Antioxidant supplements are also available but they do not have the same effect as eating antioxidant-rich foods.

Healthy Lifestyle

Prevent cataracts naturally by leading a healthy life. Start by eating a well-balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, protein, fiber, dairy and monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. For those already at a "healthy" weight, sustain it be participating in at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular activity five days a week. Individuals who are above their "ideal" weight should work with their physician to set up a weight loss program that consists of diet and exercise. Those suffering from diabetes or other health issues that may put them at greater risk of developing cataracts should maintain their drug treatment plan.

Give Up Bad Habits

Smokers should make every attempt to quit. A variety of tools are available to help "kick" the habit, including medications, nicotine patches, hypnosis treatment and even daily motivational support delivered right to your desktop. Changing your habits, taking up a hobby and eliminating "triggers" also can help resist the urge to smoke. Alcohol consumption should be limited as well.
