Gray hair and white hair occur when hair follicles stop producing color pigment. Although the hair appears gray to our naked eye, gray hairs are essentially colorless, which leaves them vulnerable to staining. Environmental pollutants, medications and hair-care products build up on hair, leaving it looking dull and drab. Since gray hair does not possess any color to hide the buildup, all that we can see is the yellowish tinge associated with the buildup. Fortunately, stains can be removed at home with lemon juice and a few special hair-care products.
Step 1
Saturate the yellow portions of dry hair with ordinary lemon juice that you can purchase from the grocery store. Set a timer for 20 minutes. Rinse, shampoo and condition the hair. Towel dry and style as desired.
Step 2
Shampoo your hair with a blue-based color shampoo each time you shampoo. Rinse, and apply a blue-based color conditioner. Wait 3 to 5 minutes before rinsing out the conditioner. Towel dry and style.
Step 3
Shampoo your hair with a deep-clarifying shampoo once a week. Bring the hair to a rich lather. Wait 5 minutes, and rinse with warm water. Towel dry.
Tips and Warnings
- It may take some time to remove all of the yellow from your hair. Perform the lemon juice treatment every 2 weeks until the problem is resolved. Use the shampoos indefinitely to prevent future stains.
