Whether you are trying to lose weight or simply taking measurements to find the best fit in clothes, you will need to use a measuring tape. A cloth measuring tape works the best when it comes to measuring your body, because it conforms to your curves when you wrap it around your body. Custom measurements are determined in inches. Wrapping the measuring tape around your body and counting the number of inches will give you the measurement for that particular area of your body.
Men
Step 1
Measure your neck to determine the best fit for dress shirts. Holding one end of the measuring tape in one hand, wrap the measuring tape around the base of your neck (just above your shoulders) with the other hand. The amount of inches reflects your neck size.
Step 2
Get your chest measurement by holding one end of the measuring tape in one hand and wrapping the other end around the fullest part of your chest. The number of inches is equal to your chest size.
Step 3
Find your waist size for your next pair of trousers by holding one end of the measuring tape in one hand and wrapping the other end around your waist with the other hand. Wrap the measuring tape around your waist at the same height you wear your trousers. The amount of inches shown is your waist size.
Step 4
Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your hips to determine your hip size. Stand with your feet spread approximately 6 inches apart and wrap the measuring tape around you until both hands meet. The number of inches represents your hip size.
Step 5
Ask a friend to help you determine your sleeve size for dress shirts. Bend your elbow and place your hand on your hip. Have your friend measure from the middle of your neck down to your bent elbow, and then down to your wrist. The result is your sleeve size.
Women
Step 1
Measure your bust size by wrapping the measuring tape around the fullest part of your breasts. The amount of inches shown where your hands meet reflects your bust size.
Step 2
Wrap the measuring tape around your waist (on most women it is the area at or just below the belly button. Hold one end of the tape measure in one hand and wrap the bulk of the tape around your waist with the other hand. The amount of inches shown at the meeting point is your waist measurement.
Step 3
Stand with your feet approximately 6 inches apart and wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your hips. The result in inches equals your hip size.
