School provides your child with many opportunities to learn and form friendships. While this is great for kids, activities outside of school will allow your child to pursue her own interests and passions. Talk with your child about her interests. Then work together to find an extracurricular activity she will enjoy.
Dance
Dance classes provide your child with physical activity in a noncompetitive way. There are many different types of dance that both boys and girls may enjoy, including ballet, tap, hip hop, ballroom, salsa and modern. Check schedules at local recreation centers to see what options exist for your child's age and skill level.
Martial Arts
Martial arts can teach your child to defend himself as well as boost her self-confidence. Martial arts build physical and mental strength as your child masters movements and learns self-control. Many parents choose martial arts if their child struggles with self-confidence or issues with teasing because it can improve self-esteem and empower children to believe in themselves. There are several different options for martial arts lessons including t'ai chi, karate, judo and tae kwon do. Many recreation centers offer classes or you can find a private business.
Swimming
Swimming is good exercise and can teach your child new skills that will last a lifetime. Taking swim lessons teaches your child how to swim but also fosters independence. Many recreation centers offer swim lessons for children of all ages and ability levels.
Team Sports
Many children enjoy the thrill of competition that goes along with playing team sports. Playing on a team teaches your child how to work with others and lets him master skills related to a game. Encourage your child to choose a sport he already likes or one that he would like to learn more about. Baseball, basketball, soccer, football, hockey and lacrosse are among options.
